The National Stone Collection is an original landart project being developed by designers craft:pegg to create a national stone collection. The proposal draws together monoliths of every rock type in the United Kingdom forming an open air permanent record of the national geology. The piece provides site specific sculpture, a national educational resource and a community focus, which will resonate for generations into the future.
The site itself is a hill of reclaimed quarry spoil with views over Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire situated in the heart of the National Forest. The piece draws directly on the sites history, character and the intimate link the local community has had with working rocks for generations.
The stones themselves are arranged in a number of concentric rings, their positions determined by their distance and direction from the site. Each monolith may be gifted by communities, quarries or even regions making the site a place of national significance drawing material and visitors from around the country, making this centre point of the country a focal point for education and inspiration.
